Adelaide Summer Car Care Checklist: Get Your Car Ready for the Heat

Adelaide summers are tough on cars. Long stretches of extreme heat put extra strain on your engine, battery, tyres, and air conditioning system — and the last thing anyone wants is a breakdown in 40-degree heat. A little preparation now can save you a lot of stress later.

Here’s what our mechanics recommend checking before the temperature really climbs.

Test Your Air Conditioning Early

There’s nothing worse than discovering your air conditioning isn’t working on the first genuinely hot day of the year. Weak airflow, warm air, or unusual smells usually point to a refrigerant leak or a compressor issue. Getting your air conditioning checked and regassed before summer means you’ll actually be comfortable on the road — and small issues won’t turn into an expensive compressor replacement.

Have Your Battery Tested

Heat is one of the biggest causes of battery failure — even more than cold weather. High temperatures speed up the chemical reactions inside your battery, which shortens its lifespan and increases the risk of it failing without warning. If your battery is more than three years old, it’s worth having it load-tested before summer hits.

Check Your Coolant System

Your cooling system works overtime in hot weather to stop your engine from overheating. Low or old coolant, a failing radiator, or a worn water pump can all lead to overheating — one of the most common (and preventable) causes of roadside breakdowns in summer.

Inspect Your Tyres

Hot roads and long drives put extra pressure — literally — on your tyres. Check tread depth and tyre pressure regularly, as underinflated tyres are more prone to blowouts in extreme heat. If your tyres are getting worn, a wheel alignment check is worth doing as well.

Check Your Transmission Fluid

Heat can cause automatic transmission fluid to break down faster, leading to rougher gear changes and, over time, more serious transmission wear. If your car is due for an automatic transmission service, getting it done before summer helps your car handle the extra heat load more smoothly.

Don’t Skip Your Logbook Service

If your car is due for a scheduled logbook service, summer is a good time to get it done. A full service means your mechanic can check fluid levels, belts, hoses, and other components that are especially vulnerable to heat — all in one visit.
